July 2014. Where the hell has time gone?!!? Throw back to the First-of-its-kind (to my knowledge), wearable fresh flower dress to ever hit the WWW. I had seen an artificial dress (silk flowers, sewn on, with no worries of wilting or weight or a hundred other issues that come with FRESH flowers) by @alexandermcqueen , but never anything with fresh blooms. Never with a living breathing model walking around in it. Watch to the end to see the “mechanics” that I shoved my then-17year old niece @jazlyn.mccauley into. I wonder why she was uncomfortable? 😜 Coming March 22, Im teaming up with @poshbridallanc for a dress fashion show @drumoreestate ……. Putting my younger niece into a much more comfortable, upgraded design, and sending her down a runway to boot! Ever wonder what happens to flowers after an event with an installation? Well, the reality is they usually end up dumped on a tarp late at night then heaped into the compost pile the next day. Usually flowers are out of water and on their last leg by the time they get back from tear down……. And our team is tired and its dark and theres no way anyone is standing at the barn sorting and re-hydrating anything. But after the @brentlmiller @eventsbygillianandco wedding show, with a little forethought (and tear down at 4pm not 11pm!), some 🌸 were remade into a crazy exspensive arrangement for @alyssabuntonphoto , just for fun. Always a blast...

How a florist does a winter wedding show: Order hundreds of $ of non-local flowers (because… January). Cancel the order when a snowstorm threatens and the show might cancel. Re-order when the snow disappears from the forecast. Pick up flowers at the end of the icy driveway and freeze while waiting for the truck… only to discover half your order is missing or frozen. Re-order more flowers (and spend even more). Change the color palette based on what’s still available. Decide to add Yellow Twig Dogwood, then head out into the tundra to harvest it. Pick up another delivery… and again find half the flowers frozen and dead. Switch colors back to the original plan, then realize the new design revolved around dogwood that no longer fits the palette, and finally decide to just use whatever is alive. Remember a stand needed for the show is stuck in the upper barn. There’s too much snow for the tractor or wheelbarrow, its too heavy to carry… so you beg your beefcake husband to haul it down. Finally start prepping—only to remember most of your plan needs designed on site in a wildly unrealistic short amount of time. Prep what you can: stripping leaves off half-dead roses, trimming freeze damage from orchids that may not survive the weekend, and wrestling with the world’s tiniest “hanging” amaranthus. .. And now I’m standing here staring at questionable flowers in questionable colors, wondering how many of you will come see me on Sunday? What. A. Week. !!!!! Still on cloud nine with a touch of zoomies…… Emily & Dan were a BLAST to work with, the kind of couple who makes you just want to go ahead and cut two more handfuls of toad lilies, gather a bit more hydrangea, and make sure there are dahlias on overload. We were able to achieve 95% local and #americangrownflowers thanks to @riversideblooms , @coolspringgarden , @peterkortroses , @therusticbunch , @schaefferflowers @east_texas_smilax , and @dvflora . Most foliage was cut from our own property (yes, I have planted a jungle over the years for just this reason!) All mechanics were foam free. Zip zero zilch. Chicken wire and buckets and other mechanics are now broken down to be re-used. Flowers from installs will return to the earth via composting. Here is proof that you can have epic floral installations at your wedding without polluting the earth. . Could not have done it without my incredible team!!! One of my most recommended flower-splurges: a “grounded meadow” for your ceremony, easily reused for the sweetheart table and other areas! Wedding websites have couples thinking to repurpose ceremony flowers at the sweetheart table all the time. Which is great and all, but only with pieces that are used in the same way. (Think: arbor piece meant to be viewed vertically, now laying across a table……like wearing pants as a shirt. You can do it but it will look weird.) Instead, opt for arrangements that are viewed/used the same way they are intended, like this meadow for Sawyer & Emily! Smart choices maximize your budget appropriately! Story time! I posted some blasts from the past the other day on my stories, and received a ton of questions. I started Splints & Daisies when I was 19 years old. It began as handmade soap and bath products, dried floral wreaths, and SPLINT baskets. I did home parties, educating folks on natural body care. I taught classes, and set up at historical art shows. With everything, sustainability and environmentally friendly products was a focus, long before that became mainstream. During these early years, my baskets were see by a scout looking for educators for the cast of M Night Shamalayan’s “The Village”, and I spent a few days at a camp with Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney, Weaver, and Frank Collison…… teaching basket weaving!
